Anti-alcohol abuse lobby Nacada has proposed that brewers carry pictures of the effects of excessive drinking on beer bottles.

The authority is also seeking to ban alcohol adverts on TV before 10pm.

Nacada chairman John Mututho yesterday said the adverts should be regulated to ensure children do not watch them when they are at home.

“We are seeking to have at least 30 per cent of the logo with a picture containing dangers of drinking excessive alcohol,” he said.

Mututho was meeting alcohol industry players on the proposed regulations at Morendat Training Centre in Naivasha town.

He said the Alcohol Control Act has four components: a licensing regime, treatment and rehabilitation, quality and advertisements.

Mututho said the ban on advertisements will also include films and film materials that have actors smoking or taking alcohol, including the use of celebrities to advertise alcoholic products.

He said they expect the regulations to be signed by Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaiserry in three weeks’ time.

Industry players said the proposed 30 per cent pictorial rule will affect their businesses.

Gordon Mutugi from the National Alcoholic Beverages Association of Kenya said they already have a warning label whose words are clear and understandable to consumers.

He said there is no need to have more images on their products.

“These are some of the contentious issues that we will be seeking to address and we hope to come up with a solution at the end of the two days we will be here,” he said.

Kenya Association of Hotelkeepers and Caterers executive officer Sammy Kweya said devolving alcoholic laws to he county level had taken a huge toll on their businesses.

He said different counties have made different laws, citing the Coast region.
