A man who was caught stealing arrowroots in Waguthu, Kiambaa subcounty, escaped death after he was rescued by the area chief from residents who wanted to set him ablaze.
The residents had laid an ambush for Geoffrey Ngigi on Tuesday morning and beat him up but the chief, Joseph Kang'ethe, intervened as he was about to be set ablaze.
According to area resident Arnold Maina, the farmers decided to set a trap for the thief following complaints by some of them that someone was stealing from them.
Arnold added that they beat up Ngigi to teach other thieves a lesson.
The suspect was taken to Karuri Police Station together with the sack of arrow roots that he is alleged to have stolen.
