The award was established by Italian newspaper Tuttosport in 2003 and is voted on by several European football journalists. The likes of Lionel Messi, Wayne Rooney, Paul Pogba, Mario Goetze and Sergio Aguero have been honoured with the gong over the 12 years of its existence, so Martial is in esteemed company.
