A record twenty two inmates from Naivasha GK prison were among hundreds of candidates who sat for their KCSE examinations in Naivasha.

Despite various challenges facing them, the inmates who included eight serving life sentence were full of confidence that they would perform well in the national exams.

The inmates noted that unlike other learning institutions, the prison did not have trained teachers and learning materials thus giving them an unfair starting point.

The inmates who include a 42 year old South Sudanese refugee exuded confidence that they would perform well in the exams.

According to Ali Abokafi who is serving 20 years for defilement, their teachers had prepared them well for the national exams.

Ali who was arrested and tried in Kakuma ten years ago said that education had changed the lives of many inmates in the prison.

“I did not get a chance to seat for my exams in the past but through prison I have been given a second opportunity,” said the refugee.

He called for more support to the education programme noting that the inmates faced tens of challenges when it came to practical lessons.

The sentiments were echoed by the youngest inmate Dickson Ben who identified lack of trained teachers as the major challenge that the inmates faced.

The 19 year old called for more support in provision of learning equipment so that the inmates could have a level playing ground with other candidates in private and public schools.

“My dream is to be a lawyer in future and despite the challenges that am facing in prison am sure that I shall overcome this,” said the inmate who is serving seven years for robbery.

Ben called on well-wishers and the government to support the education system which had turned out to be one of the main tools of rehabilitation.
