The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has cleared Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho of graft claims over the alleged irregular allocation of the Mwembe Tayari Market to a private investor.

In a statement, the commission recommended the closure of the case on Wednesday due to lack of evidence linking Joho to the deal.

The commission also cleared Mombasa businessmen Mohammed Abdullah Zubedi and Abdulhakim Abdullah Zubedi, who had been accused of grabbing the market.

Joho had been accused of facilitating the grabbing after he authorized the demolition of a structure at the market to flush out muggers, drug users and criminals.

The governor had repeatedly denied the allegations stating that the market still remained as property of the Mombasa government.
