A driver died instantly following a road accident on Kisumu -Nairobi road at Molem, Nyamasaria.
The accident involved a Probox car which collided head on with a lorry ferrying bananas and tomatoes.
A woman was rescued and rushed to hospital in critical condition with broken legs from the 10pm accident.
Three other women and the occupants of the lorry also sustained serious injuries.
Police had to shoot in the air to disperse a crowd which was looting the goods belonging to the accident victims.
A number of people escaped with bananas and crates of tomatoes instead of rescuing the victims.
"It is unfortunate that some people are so daring to rob the dead and survivors of the accident," Vincent Opiyo, a witness, said.
The accident caused traffic snarl up for more than half an hour before the police arrived.
Those rescued were rushed to Kisumu county hospital and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital.
Nyanza traffic boss Andrew Naibei said they will provide full details of the accident once they are done with investigations.
