The win was the perfect revenge for the Saints who failed to beat the Black Cats in four meetings last season (2 draws and 2 defeats). The hosts did not take long to get on the scoresheet when Sunderland defender Santiago Vergini put the ball in his own net in the 12th minute.
[dropcap style="default" size="4"]11[/dropcap] The win was Southampton's first over Sunderland in 11 years. Before today, The Saints had last defeated the Black Cats on 28th January 2003. After that Sunderland went undefeated in 8 matches against Southampton winning 4 times and drawing in four matches.
Southampton's in-form striker Graziano Pelle doubled the hosts' lead six minutes with his 5th goal of the season. Jack Cork who had been preferred to Victor Wanyama in the starting line-up by Ronald Koeman, put the result beyond the visitor's reach when he scored Southampton's third in the 37th minute.
After the restart, Southampton added 5 more goals through Liam Bridcutt (65', own goal), Pelle (65'), Dusan Tadic (78'), Wanyama (79') and Sadio Mane (86').
In the other Premier League games that kicked off at the same time, Chelsea won 2-1 away to Crystal Palace to maintain their lead at the top of the league table as Danny Welbeck rescued a point for Arsenal with a late goal in a 2-2 draw with Hull City. West Ham on other hand continued with their good form winning 3-1 away to struggling Burnley while Everton ended a 6-match winless streak by defeating Aston Villa 3-0.
