A man accused of charming a crocodile into attacking villagers was dragged to Tana River and forced to break the spell on Tuesday evening.

One Zainab Maneno, 16, identified Salim Wako as a witch doctor keeping crocodiles that had killed many residents of Wachakone village.

Wako allegedly confessed to administrative officers in Hola town but fled after Maneno's claim.

He was later arrested and taken to Hola police station where he recorded a statement saying his life was in danger.

Officers, led by acting deputy county commissioner Wilson Tangus and subcounty administration commander Lawrence Owino, escorted him to the river.

Kenya Wildlife Services rangers were also present.

Maneno, who was allegedly demon-possessed, led the crowd to where the charms had been hidden but Wako could not enchant the crocodiles out of the river.

Chewai Senior Chief Athman Mtolee assured residents that Wako would be charged if found guilty of practising witchcraft.
