Though in their joy came in the most shocking of circumstances, a family in Nyeri had reason to celebrate on Monday after a family member they had presumed dead and even buried on April 30 this year returned home days after he was spotted in Dagoretti, Nairobi County.
Ignatius Mbugua had left his home in Gitundu Village, Kahuguiini sublocation, in early April after he suffered mental illness before his family was informed a few days later, on April 20, that he had died after he was hit by a vehicle at a Toll Station near Ruiru and his body was taken to the city mortuary.
Upon receiving the information, Mbugua's brother, Christopher Wainaina, his uncle Dominic Njuguna and some neighbours proceeded to the mortuary, where they “positively identified the body” and a postmortem was done on the body in the presence of police officers from Ruiru police station.
After that, the family started burial arrangements and buried the body on April 30.
However, on Sunday morning, Mbugua was spotted at Dagoretti Market by his cousin Benson Waititu who immediately called home. Wainaina went to Dagoretti and brought his brother home.
Villagers gathered on Monday to give thanks to God and celebrate Mbugua’s homecoming.
Gatundu police boss James Kange advised the family to seek a court order to exhume the mistaken body, which is still unidentified.
