A man who survived Tuesday's Al Shabaab attack at Soko Mbuzi Village in Mandera has vowed not to return to Mandera after surviving a second terror attack in a space of 7 months.
Speaking at the Mandera Airstrip, the survivor, 28-year-old Michael Mwaniki, said he had returned to the county last month believing that security had been restored following a similar attack in December in which 36 quarry workers were killed by Al Shabaab militants.
The Nyeri resident had survived that attack but returned to the area in June to join his father who had been working at the quarry since January.
“My father came back in January after a six month’s break. I had all the reasons to believe security had returned, only to realise I was wrong,” Mwaniki said.
Despit surviving the attack, Mwania left Mandera a sad man as his father was one of the 14 people who lost their lives in the midnight attack. Mwaniki said that he hid in the ceiling with his roommates when they heard a loud bang at the gate followed by gunshots and they only descended from their hiding place long after the terrorists had left.
