A National Intelligence Service officer was killed by a mob in Buruburu on Sunday evening.
Anthony Kimathi, who was based at the NIS headquarters in Ruaraka, died at a city hospital while receiving treatment.
Buruburu CID boss Henry Kiambati said the mob mistook Kimathi for a criminal when he drew a gun. Kimathi and his two colleagues were driving towards Outering Road when they got stuck in a traffic jam.
Police said as Kimathi tried to control the traffic, a motorist blocked their car, causing a verbal exchange between the two. Kimathi is said to have drawn his gun and shot in the air.
A mob gathered at the scene and demanded that Kimathi and his colleagues identify themselves. They beat him up until he lost consciousness.
Officers from Buruburu Police Station rushed to the scene after they heard gunshots. Kimathi's colleagues escaped unhurt. Police recovered Kimathi's firearm.
There were reports Kimathi shot and injured a civilian identified as Rashid.
