RJ: Who exactly is Rhoda Odhiambo? describe yourself in five words.
RO: That is a tough question, trust me as simple as it sounds but well.. Rhoda Odhiambo is a free spirit, she comes from a family of two I am the first born and my brother is the last born.
RJ: Where did you grow up and what was it like?
RO: I grew up in Nairobi al my life, all my life I have lived like a nomad, relocating from one place to another. I have lived in Ngara, Umoja estate but the interesting bit is that in my high school life I ended up living in Migori, Busia, Kisumu and Kuria! I am an established local tourist (haha).
RJ: So I believe all that travelling and relocating signifies the number of schools you went to, am I right?
RO: Yes you are, because I did attend All Saints Cathedral Primary school and Moi Avenue primary school that is between classes 1-6 before joining Catholic Parochial where I sat my KCPE. At Least in high school I managed to ditch my nomadic life after settling at Nyabisawa girls high school.
Kenya institute of mass communication was my next stop where I got to pursue my journalism career.
RJ: Impressive, so speaking of journalism, has it always been your dream career or how did you find yourself here?
RO: I was always passionate about journalism, a passion which dates back to high school. And the rest is history!
RJ: How did you join media and for how long have you been in this industry?
RO: I started out as an intern at Kenya news agency (KNA) under print media back in 2012.
Months later, I joined Radio Africa as an intern as well at Kiss TV as a reporter/producer for approximately an year and a half.
RJ: How was the experience like working in a TV station?
RO: I really enjoyed the experience, it being the first time I was so ecstatic.
RJ: Then how did you end up joining radio?
RO: I remember soon as Kiss TV changed to an entertainment station, the radio team happened to be looking for a reporter so I applied and luckily enough my application was approved. That was back in 2014.
RJ: Radio Jambo fans love your voice and probably most of them wonder whether you are single or taken. Is Rhoda single?
RO: I am very single! I have been single for four years and before you ask, I am single by choice.
RJ: Who is your ideal boyfriend/husband material?
RO: That is tricky! One, of course he has to be mature, maturity is key. I want a man whom we can have a real conversation, not just a man whom we'll just be talking about music and movies.
I want a man whom together we can discuss issues affecting the nation, the serious stuff that couples tend to ignore in a relationship.
Apart from that, in terms of physique he has to be a bit chubby because I am not attracted to thin men (giggles..) Oh my God did I just say that?. Anyway yeah, not extremely thin like the size of half my thigh. I remember this one time when a guy I would describe as super thin tried to pursue me but of course he didn't have a chance. End of story. Another thing he has to be kind, have both qualities of an introvert and an extrovert.
If I was to choose between a smoker and a drunkard, I would comfortably settle for the latter. I cannot stand a smoker, the smell is a total turn off.
RJ: Do looks really matter to you?
RO: It is never about the looks for me. You can have the looks but you are dump.
RJ: Five interesting things Jambo listeners don't know about Rhoda?
Abstinence: I am practising abstinence! (blushes). That is all I can say.
Swimming: I am a great swimmer, which is weird because as a kid I never actually enjoyed the sport. I was the kid who would sit tight by the pool side and dip my feet in the pool for hours and that was it. Right now, I have mastered three strokes; the freestyle, backstroke and butterfly.
Tomboy: I was once a tomboy. Flip flops, baggy shorts, shirts and shorts were my all time favourite outfits. I still think the boy in me is very much alive, maybe am winning the fight after all.
Food: Food food food! Food defines me! my social media pages are awash with food pictures. If I wasn't a journalist, I would be a professional chef.
German: This is interesting. I am a fluent German speaker, after college I studied German language at Goethe institute for eight years. Omera don't joke.
RJ: If you were to host a show with one of the Radio Jambo presenters who would it be and why?
I will confidently say Mbusii. Why? because I would love to learn more about reggae music from the pastor himself. Also his fluency in Sheng is another reason I would love to hang out with him and learn all the hood terminologies.
RJ: Most embarrassing moment as a newsreader/reporter?
RO: (Hahahaha) Oh no! did you have to! believe me you, there was this time when I ignorantly said yes to Mbusii and Lion's sexual overtures on air! I had no idea what kuni meant and since I wanted to look cool I ended up answering; I don't mind, it's no big deal! little did I know.
RJ: Who is your source of inspiration?
RO: CNN's Christiane Amanpour.
RJ: What would be your advise to radio jambo fans?
RO: Whatever you do today, go hard on it as if it is your last day on earth.
RJ: Thank you so much for making time to speak to us Rhoda and we wish you all the best!.
RO: Thank you so much, I am deeply honoured.
