Chelsea boosted their poor start to the Premier League season with a key 2-0 win over Arsenal at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
Kurt Zouma and Eden Hazard bagged the goals for Jose Mourinho’s side but all the post-match furore has surrounded Diego Costa specifically, and the sending off of Gabriel Paulista for two bookings at the end of the first half.
Costa wound up both Gabriel and Laurent Koscielny, with the Brazilian first booked along with Costa before leaving the pitch after referee Mike Dean was convinced that he had stamped on the Chelsea striker.
Much of the post-match debate has either centred on Diego Costa’s gamesmanship and Gabriel Paulista’s naïveté.
For Arsenal fans defending Gabriel Paulista it does bear mentioning that he has faced Costa before in a La Liga match.
On October 11, 2013, Villarreal held Atletico Madrid to a 1-1 draw at El Madrigal. Towards the end of the match, Costa elbowed Gabriel, who went down.
Neither player was booked but it does look like both players knew full well what they were getting into on Saturday.
