The Judicial Service Commission has received eight applications for the soon-to-be vacant position of Deputy Chief Justice.

Seven of the applicants are women and they include four judges while the eighth applicant is a foreigner who has only been identified as Isaac.

The position of the Deputy CJ is expected to fall vacant in January 2016 following the retirement of Kalpana Rawal.

Rawal has however challenged her retirement saying it is unconstitutional. She claims that being a senior judge appointed under the old constitution, her retirement age should be 74 and not 70 as the current constitution stipulates.

Monday was the deadline for those wishing to replace Rawal to send their applications and the following are names of the seven women who have applied for that position; Court of Appeal Judges Agnes Murgor, Roselyn Nambuye and Wanjiru Karanja, former Commissioner of the defunct Electoral Commission of Kenya Pamela Tutui, former Registrar of the Judiciary and currently a judge of the High Court, Lydia Achode and lawyer Surinder Kapila.
