A member of a dangerous gang, Wakali Kwanza (Survival For The Fittest), which is believed to be behind violent knife attacks and robberies in Mombasa's Kisauni area, has been killed.
According to police, the slain suspect is one of the key leaders of the gang which has been wrecking havoc in Kisauni.
Mohammed Bakari, was stabbed to death inside his house by an angry mob during a retaliatory attack on Saturday.
Bakari had his hand chopped off before being beaten to death in Mwandoni, police said.
He has been on the run after he allegedly killed a young man in Lamu and escaped to Mombasa, where he joined the gang.
Mombasa police boss Francis Wanjohi said they recovered weapons from his house and added that they are holding six other leaders of the Wakali Kwanza gang.
A sitting MP and a former councilor in Nyali have been questioned in relation to funding of the group.
