Univeristy students from Kakamega County will from January next year benefit from County HELB loans to further their studies.
Governor Wycliffe Oparanya said his government will launch the program in January so that university students from Kakamega who miss out on the national HELB loan can afford their education.
He said that the county government has allocated KES 20 million for the project that seeks to increase the number of students from Kakamega joining public universities.
“Many of our youths who qualify for university entrance end up lacking fees due to stiff competition on the national higher education loan and this affects the education standards in this county” said Oparanya.
“It is out of this feeling that we have come up with a county higher education loan to fund bright students who qualify to join universities” he added.
He advised university students from the county to stop seeking for bursaries from CDF and offices of MCAs.
“Leave those bursaries to your colleagues in college and secondary school students. Your education will now be financed through the county HELB loans” said Oparanya.
