Five people among them four school girls have died while nine others are in critical condition after the two vehicles they were traveling in collided in a road accident in Narok County on Friday morning.
The 12 pm accident occurred along the busy Narok-Mai Mahiu highway near Maltauro area, about 40 kilometres from Narok town.
According to Narok North OCPD Joseph Kisombe, three people -two students and a woman, died on the spot while the other two students died while undergoing treatment at Narok Cottage Hospital.
He said that the accident happened after the trailer hit at the rear of the Nissan Matatu, which was heading to Nairobi from Narok town.
“The driver of the trailer of was speeding downhill when it hit the Nissan matatu. The driver of the matatu, which belong to Narok Star Shuttle was injured at the left leg,” said Kisombe.
Those injured are receiving treatment at Narok County Referral Hospital and plans were at advance stage to transfer them to Nairobi for special treatment.
It was not established immediately whether the occupants of the trailer were among those injured or death.
The accident brought a business to standstill at nearby Standard Gauge Railway station as the workers and locals rushed to the scene to join the rescue team after receiving the sad news of the crash.
It took the police and members of the public more than an hour to disengage the wrecked car from the bus so as to save the trapped passengers and get to the mangled bodies.
The bodies were taken to the hospital Referral Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem examinations. The vehicles were towed to Olasiti Police station.
While describing the accident as unfortunately, the police boss urged the road users to observe the traffic rules saying that many lives have been lost through road carnage
Kisombe called on road users to develop a culture where respect takes precedence on our roads.
“As a country, we need to develop a national road culture where those flouting traffic rules are condemned by all of us,” said Kisombe.
