It is said the two girls from Kigio primary school had been sent home to fetch the now illegal tuition fees when they decided to venture in the swimming expedition.
Their fun was however cut short after they drowned in the wild Chania river, with the incident only coming to public knowledge after a third girl who was in their company reported the matter to her parents.
The parents then informed the parents of the victims and villagers started a search in the river on Tuesday evening.
The bodies were found on Wednesday afternoon by professional divers after hours of searching in the now swelling river.
Confirming the incident, area OCPD Beatrice Kiraguri said the two girls were overpowered by the heavy flow of the river and were unable to swim out.
The OCPD asked locals to keep a keen eye on their children to avoid similar incidences as the rains continue to rage on.
Area Sub county education officer James Koigi however said that the head teacher had denied sending the pupils home to fetch tuition fees saying they had gone to get their birth certificates.
Koigi noted that his team will also talk to pupils in the school to establish whether the head teacher is being truthful.
He noted that if the allegations are true, the teacher will be subjected to disciplinary measures through the Teachers Service Commission as tuitions are illegal.
“We have launched investigations into this matter and if the school head is found to be on the wrong, then his report will be forwarded to TSC for the appropriate disciplinary action,” Koigi said.
