Legendary football brothers Victor Wanyama and McDonald Mariga have embarked on a plan to not only nurture young talents, but to also boost their lives by ensuring they receive quality education.
The two long serving Harambee Stars players made the announcement during the launch of their maiden Under-16 Wanyama Roya charity cup tournament which took place last weekend at St. Mary's High School grounds.
As they look to help discover aspiring Wanyama's who will propel the Kenyan flag high in future, the two in partnership with ROYA entertainment will be catering for the kids' education needs even as they continue to develop their talents on the field.
“I am happy to be back in Kenya and to launch this tournament with my big brother as it’s something we have dreamt of for a long time. Majority of players in our country lack information on how to build careers that can sustain them past their active football careers and make wrong decisions after their retirement." Said Tottenham midfielder, Wanyama.
He added, I think that's the motive to try and give them (kids) exposure as well as nurture their talents to enable them to have successful careers and not just football.
I think by giving them this support they can be able to better their lives.
So what really motivated this move?
I think kila mmoja anajua Kenya kuna talented players juu Kenya imetoa professionals wengi wanajulikana na I think tukiwa more like 10 times the number ya hao ma professionals wamekuwa, I think pia national team itakuwa mbele, players from grassroots hawatakuwa kama sahii so every level itakuja ipande from academies to national team. Said Mariga who now plies his trade at Real Oviedo, Spain.Mariga added, With the milestones we’ve made in our individual careers, I am confident that we can teach the young a few tricks. We would like to use this platform to inspire the next generation of young stars to make better choices and break this cycle.’’
