Here are some of the largest Sea Ports in Africa

Many African countries have had their ports expanded and developed due to the increase of trade around the world.  Many valuable things are transported via the sea hence making certain African countries enhance their port to be able to accommodate large shipping and the increase of trade.

1. Morocco 

The Tangier-Med Port only opened its doors ten years ago but has grown in such a quick rate. Right now it is able to accommodate commercial vessels and can handle up to 3.5 million containers.

2. Ivory Coast

The biggest port in the West African sub-region and the second biggest in Africa  has been welcoming ships since 1951. Port of Abidjan is able to accommodate  20,000 twenty-foot equivalent units.

It has helped to boost trade in Ivory coast.

3. Nigeria

The port of Lagos has had a great impact in increasing Nigeria's wealth. Its enormous facility is situated at the heart of Nigeria’s economic hub. It is capable of berthing vessels, handling cargo, and stacking and storing goods.

4. South Africa

Port of Durban is  the fourth-largest container terminal in the Southern Hemisphere. It has the capability of handling 2.5 million twenty foot equivalent units.

It is the largest shipping terminal in  Sub-Saharan Africa.

5. Djibouti

The port of Djibouti is situated at the entrance of the Red Sea and is strategically situated . It is a reliable link between Asian, African and European trade routes.

It has the capability of handling huge number of twenty foot equivalent units and has helped improve Djibouti's economy.

6. Kenya

Mombasa has been one of the most important ports in the East African region. is referred to as 'the city of merchants”', as its construction can be traced back to before the arrival of Portuguese explorers in the region.

The port is served by not only local businesses but those from Uganda and Tanzania as well, via a railway service, and provides those traders with a direct link to 80 ports across the world.
