In the Kikuyu tradition, a man is not allowed to bury his wife if he has not paid the full dowry. Following the payment however, Grace Wairimu will now be buried as Njenga’s rightful wife.
Wairimu’s mother, Elizabeth Nyambere, received the dowry in a low-profile ceremony at her Njiru home.
Njenga was escorted by his elder brother, Peter.
A goat was slaughtered and shared among the few guests.
Those who attended the ceremony said the goat meat shows the spirit of togetherness.
Others shared traditional beer made from honey before Njenga was officially granted the right to perform burial rites on his wife.
Njenga called a press conference in his Mutero, Karen home after the ceremony and said he has forgiven the Kitengela Maasai community who blocked him from burying his wife over alleged association with Mungiki.
“I have, today, forgiven them for they were encouraged by their elected leaders to deny me a right to bury my people,” Njenga said.
He said the leaders had met with the locals and urged them to reject his request to bury his wife.
