An independent candidate is an individual or a politician who is not affiliated to any political party.
Almost 3000 candidates have been cleared by the Registrar of Political Parties to vie for various positions as independent candidates, in a move some analysts say is expected to shape the country's political landscape.
However, being an independent candidate comes with a load of challenges which plays a major role in separating the wheat from the chaff, an exercise that is not for the faint hearted.
Among the challenges they face includes submitting a symbol that they will use to represent them on the ballot paper. It is not as easy as it sounds.
Two of Kenya's biggest political parties, Orange Democratic Party and Jubilee party have the Orange fruit and grasping hands to symbolize unity respectively.
Some of the aspirants had a tough time coming up with a unique symbol and with time running out, they had to settle for the cheekiest of them all.
One Willis Ouma, a parliamentary aspirant from Kisauni settled for a pack of toothpicks and he argues that it is an essential 'tool' for every Kenyan since "We must all pick our teeth after every meal regardless. "
Brian Omondi settled for an eight gigabyte flash drive and the reasoning behind it is; "There is no other candidate who used the flash drive especially one that can handle such quantity of data."
Other aspirants had no choice but adopt such symbols especially after the Registrar of Political Parties rejected their previous submissions, notifying them those symbols have been submitted and approved.
Some of the funniest symbols include staplers, clothes hangers, fish rocks, trees, electric benders among others.
Check out the video below which features 10 of the funniest symbols used by independent candidates, who have been cleared to run during the August polls.
