Arsonists on Wednesday morning stormed into and razed a Freemason temple in King’ong’o, Nyeri county.
Property of unknown value was destroyed in the 5am incident. Among the things that went up in smoke were furniture, cutlery, religious books and a fridge.
The caretaker of the hall named Mt Kenya Lodge, John Matasa, told the Star that he was in his house when he saw huge flames emanating from the hall.
Matasa said he rushed to the scene and saw men running from the burning hall. He said they went through the perimeter fence.
He said the arsonists cut a window grill and used a stool which they had carried to enter the hall.
Matasa said he raised the alarm but neighbours did not go to help put out the fire. Nyeri county fire fighters later arrived to extinguish it.
Nyeri Central Deputy Commissioner John Marete said no arrests have been made so far.
The hall was burnt in 2007 and more recently in June.
Members of the temple denied allegations that it is used by devil worshippers.
