Holders Manchester City were knocked out of the League Cup as a youthful Newcastle side earned the club's first win in 12 attempts at Etihad Stadium.

Teenage forward Rolando Aarons opened the scoring for the under fire toon side with an angled drive into the far corner, ending the club's run of 525 minutes without a goal for Newcastle against Man City. The 18 year old  capitalized on Fernandinho's mistake after the midfielder gave the ball away, and the England Under 20 star raced clear to slide a shot between the legs of reserve goalkeeper Willy Caballero.

After the break, the visitors enthralling performance continued. Moussa Sissoko wrapped up his team's unlikely victory in the 75th minute, throwing the hapless Fernandinho an outrageous dummy on the edge of the penalty area, surging past Bacary Sagna and beating Caballero across his body with a toe poke in to the far corner.

The win saw Newcastle cruise to the competition's quarter finals, for the first time in eight attempts, where they will be facing Tottenham whom they beat 1-2 in the weekend. Tottenham won their respective Capital One fixture against Brighton, after  Lamela and Kane gave the hosts a 2-0 win.

Newcastle's players embraced in a celebratory huddle at the final whistle after reaching the quarter-finals of a domestic cup competition for the first time under boss Alan Pardew.

Magpies supporters had called for Pardew to be sacked after a poor start to the campaign in which their team failed to win any of their first six Premier League matches.
