Sunderland's nickname has proved to be a source of misfortune for themselves rather than their opponents. In their 3-1 win over Crsytal Palace yesterday, their defender Wes Brown had teammates Stephen Fletcher and Jordi Gomez to thank for their late goals for saving him embarassment of having let the team down as it was his own goal that had drawn the hosts level.

Adding Brown's own goal, the Black Cats have already scored 4 own goals in the Premier League this season which is just two short of the 6 goals they put in the wrong end last season.

Three of those four own goals came in the 8-0 defeat to Southampton last month with 28 matches remaining, few would resist the temptation to bet on Sunderland breaking Leicester City's record of most own goals scored in a Premier League season. Leicester City set that record during the 2003/04 Premier League season when they put 8 goals in their own net. The Foxes ended up being relegated that season and with Sunderland lying just two points above the relegation zone, they could just end up playing in the Championship next season if they do not arrest their increased appetite for own goals early enough.

Below are videos of the four own goals that Sunderland have scored in the Premier League this season.

Santiago Vergini's own goal was the first of 8 goals that Sunderland let in during an embarassing defeat to Southampton last month.

Not to be outdone, Liam Bridcutt made it 4-0 for Southampton with a failed desperate attempt to have the ball cleared.

The goal was first credited to Sadio Mane before going down as an own goal by Patrick van Aanholt following a review by the Dubious Goals Committee.

You can not make this up. A player on-loan from Manchester United crosses the ball to a teammate who is a former Manchester United player whose header is saved by a former Manchester City goalkeeper before a cross from the former Manchester United player is put in the net by an opposition player who is a former Manchester United player. Too many words for no reason. Just watch the video.
