Three people suffocated to death on Wednesday night in Nairobi's Mukuru Slums after they inhaled fumes from a jiko.

The victims, two women and a man, are Ugandan nationals and they had left the stove lit to keep them warm.

A jiko emits carbon monoxide gas which causes death by suffocation if inhaled in a poorly ventilated room.

The victims had closed the windows to their room.

The incident comes days after another woman, Mammy Rugina, was found dead in her bathroom in Embakasi after inhaling fumes from a jiko.

Rugina was a sister to the late gospel musician Angela Chibalonza.
