Zambia based trio Jesse Were, David Owino and Antony Okumu was due to link up with the team yesterday. The national side which travels to Free Town tomorrow in the morning will be without Belgium based midfielder Johanna Omollo and Aboud Omar due to injuries. The match will be played on Saturday.
Harambee stars will miss the services of Belgium-based midfielder Johanna Omollo of Royal Antwerp and Aboud Omar of Slavia Sofia in Bulgaria in their 2019 African Cup of Nations qualifier against Sierra Leone due to injuries.
“Omollo and Abud Omar have been ruled out of the qualifier due to injuries sustained while playing for their respective clubs,” read a statement from Football Kenya Federation.
The absence of Aboud gives an opportunity to Georgia-based former Gor Mahia leftback Eric ‘Marcelo’ Ouma to reclaim the spot he had made his own prior to his switch to play for Kokhetti Poti.
Marcelo has not featured for the national team since moving to Europe after impressing in what was his first season in elite Kenyan football in 2015.
The federation further disclosed that five foreign-based players, among them skipper Victor Wanyama were already in camp while former Mathare United star Eric Johanna, who plays in Sweden, linked up with his compatriots yesterday.
“Erick Johanna reported to camp this morning. Zesco trio of David Owino, Jesse Were and Anthony Akumu are scheduled to report later in the evening (yesterday) while Ayub Timbe, Michael Olunga and David Ochieng will link up with the team tomorrow (today) morning,” the statement added.
Meanwhile, one of the new faces in the national team training camp in Machakos, Ulinzi Stars’ midfielder Daniel Waweru is pleased to have earned his first ever call up to the squad and hopes this will inspire him to work even harder to earn a maiden cap.
Waweru is one of the four Ulinzi players in the squad alongside goalkeeper James Saruni, winger Samuel Onyango and striker Stephen Waruru and with his team-mates they will know today if they will make the traveling party to Sierra Leone tomorrow for Saturday’s qualifier.
Waweru has been in superb form for the soldiers, being directly involved in nine goals in the opening 13 games of the season, scoring three and assisting six.
