SAD: Eleven perish in Kimende matatu crash

Eleven people, among them children, died in a grisly accident on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway at Kimende town in Lari constituency.

Three people died instantly in the matatu which collided with a lorry ferrying green maize to Nairobi at about 11pm on Tuesday.

Eight others succumbed to their injuries while being taken to the hospital, Robert Kimani of St John Ambulance said.

Two survivors are receiving treatment at Kijabe Mission hospital where they were rushed by first responders.

Kimani said the victims suffered deep cuts. "The impact indicates that the vehicles were speeding."

"The victims were badly injured and were bleeding a lot. This is one of the worst accidents we have witnessed in this area," he said.

The wreckage of the vehicles was towed to Lari police station.
