A 23-year-old man is changing the lives of residents of Mathioya in Murang’a County through his hydroelectric power project that has connected more than 72 homes to electricity, writes.

John Wangari's success with the project is inspired by his lifelong passion for nature and energy production but is in stark contrast with his KCSE results in physics, a core subject for the field that he is in.

Despite scoring a D- in the subject in his KCSE, Wangari remained undeterred in achieving his goal of connecting to his community to electric power.

While in standard three, Wangari, inverted a wooden motor, which he still has to date, that he used to draw water from the River Ngondo when he was sent home for school fees.

Through his venture, Wangari says that he has been able to create jobs for five youths and he added that with government support, he will be able to employ and train more young people.

His efforts has seen him earn recognition from the Netfund Green Innovation as he was recently crowned the best innovator in energy and had the award presented to him by First Lady Margaret Kenyatta.
